Some Jaguar
History
The company was
founded in 1922, and
at that time was
named the Swallow
Sidecar Company. The
Jaguar name emerged
after World War II –
the name change was
due to the
questionable
connotations of the
“SS” at that time.
Since the 30’s, the
Jaguar brand has
been famous for
manufacturing fine
sports cars and
luxury saloons.
In 1966, British
Motor Holdings came
about as Jaguar
merged with the
Austin-Morris
combine, British
Motor Corporation.
Another merger in
1968 with Leyland
and Rover saw the
Jaguar name come
under the British
Leyland Motor
Corporation. Then as
result of some
financial
difficulties, Jaguar
came under British
Leyland (BL) Ltd in
1975.
In 1984, one of the
Thatcher
government's
privatization moves
saw Jaguar floated
on the stock market
as a separate
company with the
remaining portion of
the Austin Rover
group. It was then
that Ford took over
in the very late
80’s.
Jaguar became a part
of Ford’s premier
new automotive group
in 1999 along side
the likes of
Volvo
and
Aston Martin. In
2001 Land Rover was
then added to this
elite automotive
group after being
purchased from BMW.
Jaguars today are
proudly manufactured
in Liverpool,
England.
