Honda Hino Motors Limited (Hino) is Japan's leading
manufacturer
of medium and
heavy-duty diesel trucks and buses and is also a member of
the
Toyota group.
The Hino company roots date back as far as 1910. Hino
produced their first vehicle in 1913 - it was the
Model TGE A-Type
truck and the Hino name was not yet in use.
The company has had
several names along the way. Some of the latter names were:
Tokyo Automobile Industry Company Limited and Diesel Motor
Industry Company Limited which was eventually to become
Isuzu Motors Limited.
The Hino name was born in 1942 and after World War II. Hino
began to
specialise in
heavy-duty trailer-trucks, buses and diesel engines market
at that time and was then formally known as Hino Industry
Company Limited.
In and effort to
narrow the company focus, and boost marketing of the Hino
name, in 1948, Hino added the word "Diesel" to their name
and then became Hino Diesel Industry Company Limited.
1953 saw Hino enter the private motor car market as they
manufactured
Renault under licence. And in 1961, the Contessa 900 was
born.
Italian stylist Michelotti
reworked the design of the Contessa in 1964 with a 1300cc
rear-mounted engine. Shortly after, in 1967, Hino ceased
production of their private cars when they joined the
Toyota group.
